Facts About the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA)

Have you ever wondered how the equipment in the power sector compares with the global standards? The enforcement of technical standards in the Nigerian power sector is an important factor that guarantees a stable and reliable electricity supply to consumers. Therefore, equipment standards in the electricity sector must conform to local and global industry standards to ensure the safety of consumers and the sector stakeholders. It is in this regard, the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) was established.

What is the mandate of NEMSA?

NEMSA was established in 2015 following the passage of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency Act by the National Assembly. The Agency is solely authorised to enforce all technical standards & regulations, inspect electrical equipment, and test/certify all electrical installations in Nigeria. Following the establishment of NEMSA, under the leadership of Engr. Peter Ewesor, the agency, hit the ground running In line with its mandate.

Is NEMSA different from NERC?

Yes, NEMSA is very different from the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). While NEMSA enforces technical standards and regulations in the electricity sector, the NERC is the electricity regulator. Therefore, NERC undertakes the technical and economic regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

What are the successes recorded by NEMSA?

NEMSA has recorded so many giant strides in the industry. For example, in 2016, NEMSA commenced a nationwide certification project for all electrical contractors, and so far, it has certified 5,211 electricity contractors.  The agency has also carried out 2,878 electrical installation projects, certified 1,456,240 electricity meters in the industry, and monitored 24,450 networks.

Where is NEMSA located?

What is NEMSA role when it comes to metering?

In line with its mandate to enforce industry standards, NEMSA carries out meter testing and certification of all meters to ensure all industry standards are met. Meters are tested in the NEMSA laboratories located at Kaduna, Oshodi and Port Harcourt.
