- Fashola has commissioned a solar microgrid at the ministry of Works headquarters.
- The system has a total capacity of 1.52MW.
- The system will help the ministry to reduce its diesel consumption by 78% annually.
The Minister of Works, Hon. Babatunde Fashola has commissioned a solar microgrid system at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The system would ensure a reliable supply of power in the ministry’s five office blocks. The project has a capacity of 1.52MW and was approved by the Federal Executive Council on the 20th March 2019, when the Ministry of Power was still part of the Works and Housing ministry.
The minister noted that the solar plant would help the ministry reduce its average diesel consumption from 764,248 litres per annum to 166,825 litres per annum, saving the ministry energy costs.
The project has also led to the adoption of energy savings measures at the ministry. For example, it has upgraded and retrofitted its electrical appliances, replacing 400 old Air-conditioning units with 400 new inverter-based energy-efficient Air-conditioning units; 2600 old light fittings with energy-saving LED lights.
According to Fashola, the project employed 382 artisans and 176 skilled workers throughout its duration.
