FCCPC to begin enforcement of electricity bills
- NERC had issued an order on capping of estimated billing
- Estimated billing issues topped FCCPC complaints
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has said it will begin the enforcement of the Order on Capping of Estimated Billing. The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission had previously issued the Order to cap the amount a Distribution Company (DisCo) can bill a customer.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera said the move by the FCCPC is a strategy to intervene in the persistent complaints received by consumers regarding estimated billing. Irukera also stated that consumer complaints regarding estimated billing had topped the complaints received by the FCCPC in 2020.
“There are two things we plan for this year; we want to go into strong enforcement of the billing cap order by the NERC. We have been talking to the NERC on that”, he said.
Irukera also advised consumers to engage with the DisCos first before seeking assistance from the FCCPC.
