Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has restated the government’s commitment to delivering electricity to 25 million people via Solar Home Systems (SHS) Solutions. The Vice President made this known during an event to mark the programme’s implementation in Jangefe, Jigawa State. The event at the Jangefe community saw the deployment of 1,000 solar home system units.
Osinbajo stated that the Solar Power Naija programme would, in its first phase, be implemented across six states, namely, Edo, Lagos, Adamawa, Anambra, Kebbi and Plateau, with deployment in the remaining 30 states commencing afterwards.

The Solar Power Naija programme, an initiative of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), aims to provide electricity access to five million households through a ₦40 billion financing programme supporting private developers. The World Bank will finance the Solar Naija programme via concessionary loans that the Central Bank of Nigeria will provide to developers.
Osinbajo also said that the government had provided subsidies and rebates – of over $200 million – for off-grid developers under the REA and World Bank ‘Nigeria Electrification Programme.
The government had earlier stated that consumers interested in owning an SHS unit would have the option of paying a monthly fee of ₦4,000 for a total period of three years, after which they outrightly own the solar panels.
