- FG moves to curb electricity sector mishaps
- NEMSA seeks the revocation of licenses for erring market participants
- “it’s either we suspend or we revoke” – Ewesor
The Managing Director, Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Engr. Peter Ewesor expressed the desire of the FG to suspend or revoke the licenses of erring market participants. He made this announcement at the inauguration of Port Harcourt Zonal Electrical Installation Contractors Certification Panel (ZEICCP), in Port Harcourt.
Engr. Ewesor noted with dismay the many electrical mishaps which occur in the sector. Speaking at the event he said “many lapses have been identified in the power sector and other workplaces in the area of the electrical installation which have resulted to the unstable networks and fire incidences over the years. These lapses are design and construction failures, improper planning and execution of electrical projects”.
Going forward, NEMSA has vowed to put the safety of lives and property of individuals first. He urged the members of the certification panel to ensure that safety was at the forefront of any certification exercise. He said, “Let us not be sympathetic, the mistake of an electrical engineer can kill a whole community. Electricity fire is the most dangerous. Make sure that safety forms part of the questions you ask”.
In response, the Chairman of the certification panel, Quadry Alana, assured the agency of its dedication to granting safety certification only, to those who have been properly accessed and found to meet industry safety standards.
