During the 2nd German-Nigeria Symposium on Green Hydrogen, Nigeria and Germany explored ways both countries can utilise the opportunities in the low-carbon hydrogen sector. The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said harnessing the country’s resource potential will provide alternative energy sources and protect the environment.

The minister, represented by Mrs Oluremi Komolafe, said that hydrogen provides a pathway for decarbonising the energy sector, considering Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Net zero emission by 2060. He said, “This particular Symposium is essential because of the economic benefits of hydrogen development. This includes harnessing the country’s resource potential, such as natural gas, wind, and solar, to ultimately provide alternative energy sources with cost reduction and help our environment.”

Ekpo reiterated that harnessing green hydrogen potential will create jobs along the hydrogen value chain. In addition, Nigeria will benefit from developing indigenous capabilities of hydrogen technologies, thereby supporting research and development projects and attracting investment and business opportunities for the country. The German Federal Foreign Office finances the German-Nigerian Hydrogen Office, implemented by GIZ.
