The Federal Government has launched the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project (SPIN) to expand irrigation, strengthen hydropower generation, and improve food security.

The project received $500 million in financing from the World Bank and aims to support sustainable power supply for irrigation while strengthening Nigeria’s resilience to floods, droughts, and climate variability.

At the launch in Abuja, Joseph Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, said the initiative focuses on food security, economic resilience and sustainable infrastructure.

Utsev explained that the project will improve dam safety and water resource management. It will also expand irrigation and hydropower systems. These measures aim to support national food security, economic growth and environmental protection.

He added that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The agenda prioritises food security, economic resilience and infrastructure development.

The minister also recalled that the President declared a national emergency on food security. According to him, the declaration highlights the need to transform Nigeria’s agricultural production systems and improve food access nationwide.

Mamman Mahmoud, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power Nigeria, represented the Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu at the event. He urged members of the project steering committee to remain committed to effective implementation.

The SPIN programme will develop about 500,000 hectares of irrigated farmland. It will also support hydropower generation and strengthen climate resilience.

Officials say the project could generate up to 30 gigawatts of sustainable energy. In addition, modern irrigation systems and improved dam safety will increase agricultural productivity.

The initiative is also expected to create jobs and stimulate economic activity. Rural communities are likely to benefit most from the new irrigation and energy infrastructure.
