The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has launched the Sustainable Energy Access Projects (SEAP) to convert 774,000 petrol-powered motorcycles across Nigeria to electric models—1,000 in each of the country’s 774 local government areas.

Alongside the launch, the ministry commissioned a 30-megawatt power facility in Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, reinforcing its push for decentralised energy.

In a statement on his X handle, the Minister, Geoffrey Nnaji, explained that SEAP seeks to deliver at least 5 megawatts of clean, decentralised power to every LGA in the country. This energy will support critical sectors such as agro-processing, healthcare, transportation, and small-scale enterprises.

The ministry witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between ALGON, Data Analytics & Solutions International Ltd, and CCK Electric Power Technology Company to accelerate SEAP’s nationwide rollout.

Nnaji described SEAP as a “transformative solution to Nigeria’s energy challenge,” blending innovation with large-scale impact. He noted that the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and contributes to Nigeria’s national clean energy transition.

Key SEAP components include deploying solar and gas-powered mini-grids in underserved LGAs, converting 1,000 petrol-powered tricycles per LGA to electric, and replacing firewood and charcoal with LPG-CNG cylinders in 20,000 households per LGA.

The ministry has urged development partners, particularly the United Nations Development Programme, to support SEAP and help improve lives in Nigeria’s marginalised communities, especially among women and youth.
