The Federal Ministry of Environment, the British High Commission and the Energy Commission of Nigeria have launched an updated version of the Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050 (NECAL 2050). This tool is a bespoke energy and emissions model to assist Nigeria to achieve its climate goals.
In a statement by the British Deputy High Commission, the present version of the NECAL 2050 calculator allows users to try several options for reducing emissions at a faster rate and aid industries and the energy sector set their greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. It also identifies realistic solutions which support the implementation of Nigeria’s climate commitments.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, said, “this is an energy planning tool that enables choices in the energy development pathways to be examined and their environmental consequences.”
On her part, the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor said: “the Ministry as the national coordinating body of climate activities will leverage on this tool for policy and decision making for the implementation of Nigeria’s long-term strategy for climate change under the Paris Agreement, as well as identify realistic solutions towards supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s NDCs.”
