FG Reaffirms Net-Zero by 2060, Universal Energy Access by 2030

  • The Federal Government pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2060 and provide universal access to modern energy by 2030.
  • The conference aims to strengthen climate science, translate research into policy, and foster regional collaboration for a just and resilient energy transition in West Africa.

Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal said at the opening of the first International Conference on Climate Change and Just Energy Transition on Wednesday, October 23, that the federal government pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 and provide universal access to modern energy by 2030.

The conference, organised by the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) in partnership with the federal government, brought together scientists, policymakers, investors, and development partners to advance climate resilience and equitable energy solutions in West Africa.

Furthermore, Lawal said the Nigeria Climate Change Act and the Green Bond Programme give the country legal and financial tools to drive its low-carbon transition. He also urged participants to translate research into actionable policies that empower communities, protect livelihoods, and unlock green economy opportunities.

Meanwhile, WASCAL Executive Director Emmanuel Ramde praised Nigeria’s leadership and highlighted the centre’s efforts to train over 700 climate science graduates and establish a competence hub in Ouagadougou. Ramde said the conference would foster partnerships, generate policy recommendations, and promote innovative models to shape national and regional climate strategies.
