FG Restores 450MW to Grid After Geregu Power Plant Maintenance

  • FG restored 450 MW to the national grid after completing maintenance at the Geregu NIPP plant, improving reliability and operating efficiency.
  • NDPHC also revived multiple long-idle gas turbines nationwide, adding up to 875 MW in mechanically available capacity.

The Federal Government has restored 450 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity to the national grid after completing scheduled maintenance at the Geregu National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plant in Kogi State.

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) disclosed this after conducting a four-week extended minor inspection at the plant in collaboration with Siemens Energy to enhance reliability, performance, and operating efficiency. The maintenance extended the plant’s Equivalent Operating Hours and strengthened one of Nigeria’s most strategic power generation assets.

NDPHC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Adighije said the Geregu recovery forms part of a broader effort to revive dormant assets across the company’s power fleet.

Over the past 12 months, NDPHC restored six gas turbines that had remained idle for years, including units at the Calabar, Omotosho II, Benin, Sapele, and Alaoji NIPP plants. The restored units will add approximately 875 MW to the company’s mechanically available capacity once gas supply constraints are eased, marking one of the largest single-year recoveries by a power generation company in Nigeria.

NDPHC has also begun restoration work at the 225 MW Gbarain NIPP plant in Bayelsa State, which has remained offline since 2020. Adighije said the rehabilitation will support the company’s commercialisation strategy aimed at supplying power to industrial and commercial clusters in the Niger Delta.

Despite challenges such as gas shortages, grid instability, and sector liquidity pressures, NDPHC reported operational and financial gains, including recovering over $10 million from legacy customers and securing $15 million in insurance claims related to the Alaoji power plant fire.

The company also recovered critical turbine and heat recovery equipment that had been abandoned at Onne Port for more than nine years, completed long-delayed transmission projects, and resolved commercial disputes with its gas supplier, ACCUGAS.

Adighije said NDPHC remains committed to restoring dormant capacity and supporting Nigeria’s push for a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply.
