FG Rolls Out CNG Vehicle Monitoring System

  • The NGVMS ensures that only certified CNG vehicles are refuelled at authorised stations.
  • Over $1 billion in private investment strengthens Nigeria’s CNG network.

The Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS) strengthens safety and accountability in Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sector. The Federal Government introduced it to promote cleaner, more affordable, and safer transport nationwide.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo launched the system during a pilot event in Abuja. He explained that the NGVMS ensures that only vehicles converted at accredited centres with certified kits can access CNG at authorised refuelling stations. This measure protects motorists and enhances transparency across the CNG network.

Ekpo noted that the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Decade of Gas Initiative. These programmes aim to make CNG a reliable and sustainable energy option for Nigerians. He added that the system provides end-to-end tracking, covering vehicle conversion, maintenance, and refuelling activities.

Meanwhile, Ismaeel Ahmed, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG (PiCNG), announced that over $1 billion in private sector investment has entered Nigeria’s gas value chain. He stated that more conversion and refuelling stations will open nationwide before the end of the year.

Furthermore, transport union representatives commended the federal government for introducing the initiative after removing the fuel subsidy. They reported that over one million free CNG kits, buses, and tricycles have reached members under the PiCNG programme. As a result, transport fares have dropped, easing food and commodity prices across the country.

Union leaders urged the government to prioritise commercial drivers in the ongoing rollout. They also called for the rapid expansion of CNG stations across more states, as many regions still lack refuelling points.

Ultimately, the NGVMS marks a vital step towards achieving cleaner, cost-effective, and safer transport solutions for Nigerians.
