The 10MW Wind Farm Project in Katsina is set to be completed and commissioned.

According to a statement attributed to the Ministry of Power, the 10MW Wind Farm Project in Katsina is set to be completed and commissioned by President Buhari later this month. The wind farm will be Nigeria’s first grid-connected wind project in the country. The project, which cost €18.5 million, was funded by the Federal Government and the JICA – Japan International Cooperation Agency, comprises 37 GEV MP 275-kW wind turbines.

The project was initiated by the Katsina State government in 2005 and then taken over by the Federal Government in 2007. However, the project suffered several setbacks that led to the delay in project completion and energy production.
Many have also expressed concerns over the plant’s expected contribution to the grid given the wind resources (average wind speed of 3.5m/s) in Katsina. The plant may not be able to achieve maximum efficiency and output of 10MW. The project was envisaged to provide electricity to the Umaru Musa Yar’adua (Katsina State) University and host community but not the grid. According to the ministry of Power, “the project will improve electricity and boost the economy in Katsina and its environs.”
