- Firefly will build the world’s first human waste into a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Harwich, Essex.
- Wizz Air secures a deal for up to 525,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) over 15 years.
Firefly, a biofuel company, plans to establish the first commercial-scale factory in Harwich, Essex, converting human waste into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Operations are expected to commence by 2028.
Wizz Air has agreed to purchase up to 525,000 tonnes of SAF over 15 years from Firefly. CEO James Hygate views biosolids, derived from sewage, as a valuable resource.
Despite being 70 per cent less carbon-intensive, SAF is much costlier than traditional jet fuel. Anglian Water will provide biosolids for the initial phase.
Firefly aims to meet a significant portion of SAF demand in the UK by 2030. Wizz Air plans to power 10 per cent of its flights with SAF by the same year.
Yvonne Moynihan of Wizz Air stresses the need for policy support to ramp up SAF production. The UK government targets 10 per cent sustainable airline fuel by 2030.
