Dominion Energy Virginia has been awarded state approval to build a mega offshore wind farm off the coast of Virginia Beach. According to reviews by regulatory agencies, the state officials noted that no participants had objected to plans for the wind farms. There were concerns, though, whether the wind farms would raise consumer energy bills.
In approving the proposal, Virginia’s State Corporation Commission noted that the 176-turbine Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project would likely be among the largest energy projects in Virginia’s history.
Also approved was the construction of infrastructure to link the wind farms to the state’s existing transmission system. The construction is expected to cost $9.8 billion.
