- Monomeros signs MoU with Barranquilla APBAQ.
- 500MW of wind energy would be supplied.
Monomeros, a Colombian company that produces fertiliser, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Barranquilla APBAQ, the Barranquilla city public lighting company. The MoU will have both companies work together on an offshore wind-powered green ammonia plant project.
Latin America and Colombia’s first offshore wind farm will be located in Barranquilla based on a separate MoU that Barranquilla signed with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in March.
In a joint statement with Barranquilla APBAQ, Monomeros has committed to applying offshore wind energy for the fueling of its green ammonia plant that is to be built in Barranquilla. This move will edge out grey ammonia. The ammonia plant is worth USD 300 million. The statement has revealed that the wind farm is expected to commence operation by 2026.
In February this year, the government of Colombia unveiled the draft national offshore wind roadmap. The roadmap extensively discussed Colombia’s potential to introduce a new renewable energy technology off its coasts. According to the Barranquilla city council, the president of Colombia will present an updated and concrete version of the roadmap today in Barranquilla.
In the first project with CIP, 350MW of wind capacity is expected in the initial phase, with a potential 150MW to be added. The city and APBAQ were among the entities that provided technical cooperation for the wind project.
