- The solar project will add 15% to Sierra Leone’s total electricity generation capacity.
- The company expects to commence building the second phase of the project in 2023.
Sierra Leone’s first independent power project has reached commercialisation. The solar farm has a 5MW capacity and it is the first phase of a larger project.
The solar power project is owned by Serengeti Energy, a private company backed by shareholders KfW, Norfund, NDF, Proparco, Stoa and, Swedfund. The company was renamed following the 2021 merger of rAREH, which owned and operated renewable energy resources in Uganda and Rwanda, and REH Group which owned and operated plants in South Africa.
The 5 MW Solar Power plant is the first phase of a 25MW solar PV power project in Yamandu, near Bo town in Sierra Leone. It will add approximately 15% to Sierra Leone’s total electricity generation capacity. This will provide a significant contribution to the need for more electricity in the country. The company expects to commence building the second phase of the project in 2023. This will complete a total investment of $35 million in the Sierra Leone power system.
