Regional Power Grids: First Tower for WAPP North Core Project Installed in Kebbi State

  • Spearheaded by Transrail Lighting Limited as part of the WAPP North Core Project, this milestone signals the start of a project encompassing 154 towers, forming a crucial link in the extensive 330 kV transmission line from Birnin Kebbi (Nigeria) to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), with connecting points in Zabori (Niger), Niamey (Niger), and Malanville (Benin), estimated to cost approximately $550 million.

Nigeria has successfully set up the inaugural tower of Lot 1A-TL in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. This marks the commencement of the construction phase for the 62 km 330 kV transmission line, which will establish a crucial link between Birnin Kebbi and the Niger/Nigeria border.

Transrail Lighting Limited is spearheading this project as part of the WAPP North Core Project. The erection of this first tower signals the beginning of a journey comprising 154 towers along the transmission line.

Project details

The North Core project involves a 330 kV transmission line spanning from Birnin Kebbi (Nigeria) to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), passing through Zabori (Niger) and Niamey (Niger) with a connection to Malanville (Benin). Estimated costs total around $550 million for the 853 km of lines and five substations.

Key components include:

  • Construction/expansion of the 330 kV Birnin Kebbi (Nigeria) Substation
  • Building a 330 kV transmission line from Birnin Kebbi (Nigeria) to Niamey (Niger)
  • Establishing a 330/132 kV Substation in Niamey (Niger)
  • Constructing a 330 kV Substation and/or 330/132 kV Substation in Zabori (Niger)
  • Erecting a 330 kV transmission line between Niamey (Niger) and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)
  • Setting up a 330/132 kV and/or 330/225 kV Substation in Ouagadougou
  • Developing a 330 kV line from Zabori (Niger) to Malanville (Benin)
  • Constructing/extending a 330/161 kV Substation in Malanville
  • Installing SCADA and Fibre Optic systems.

This pivotal step has ignited tremendous enthusiasm not only among citizens but also among local authorities. The project will ensure stable and affordable electricity access for millions of West Africans.
