- The ESJ wind farm supplies clean energy to the Californian market.
- 26 wind turbines were added in the second phase of the project.
- This is the first cross-border clean energy project between both countries.
Clean energy company Sempra has started operations at the 108MW second phase of its Energia Sierra Juarez (ESJ) wind farm in Tecate, Baja, California. The wind farm is the first cross-border clean energy project between Mexico and the United States. The expansion saw the addition of 26 new wind turbines. The facility currently generates 263MW of clean energy for the California Electricity market.
Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, noted that the expansion of the wind farm illustrates the company’s efforts to integrate the North American energy markets sustainably. “Our latest investment underscores the confidence Sempra Infrastructure has in the Baja region as we look to connect abundant wind and solar resources to key customers in the US and Mexico,” he added.
Sempra Infrastructure currently operates about 1.6GW of clean energy capacity, including two wind farms and five solar PV plants across Mexico. The company also plans to increase its clean energy capacity, and electricity transmission infrastructure to supply the US and Mexican energy markets.
