- The first Vestas turbine was installed at the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
- Iberdrola SA aims for total operational capacity by year’s end.
The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea has initiated its final construction phase by installing the first Vestas turbine. The majority owner, Iberdrola SA, aims to achieve total operational capacity by the end of the year.
Masdar, a renewables developer based in the UAE, partners with Iberdrola and holds a 49% stake in the venture. The project plans to transport the remaining 49 Vestas V174-9.5 MW turbines to the offshore construction site in the coming months for installation.
Fred Olsen Windcarrier’s Blue Tern jack-up vessel facilitates this. Once the wind farm becomes operational, it will generate enough electricity. To meet the annual needs of approximately 475,000 households.
Securing a significant portion of the wind farm’s output, telecommunications company O2 Telefonica has signed a 15-year contract for around 3,000 GWh of electricity. This agreement highlights the growing interest of major corporations in sourcing renewable energy to power their operations.
Baltic Eagle is integral to Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub. This strategic initiative includes the operational Wikinger project and the upcoming Windanker development phase.
With the successful implementation of Baltic Eagle, Iberdrola continues to strengthen its position as a critical player, which is in the offshore wind energy sector, contributing to the transition towards sustainable energy sources in Germany and beyond.
