A conglomeration of five companies has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to commence studies toward at least 900 MW of hydropower supply for a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia project in Malaysia. The project is also looking at supplying its products to South Korea. The deal was signed by South Korean construction group Samsung Engineering Co Ltd, Malaysia’s SEDC Energy and utility Sarawak Energy Berhad, South Korean Posco Holdings and chemical group Lotte Chemical.
The study is aimed at the potential of supplying hydro-based renewable power and transmission infrastructure for the H2biscus green hydrogen and ammonia scheme in Sarawak. The project should produce 7,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, 600,000 tonnes of blue ammonia, 630,000 tonnes of green ammonia and 460,000 tonnes of green methanol. This entire output is planned to be exported to South Korea.
A feasibility study for the H2biscus project is due to commence this year. After a positive outcome, commercial production will be pursued by end-2027.
