France’s Nationwide Strike Affects Electricity Production

  • French power supply reduces by 3GW due to a nationwide strike.
  •  The strike also disrupted public transport and schools.

A nationwide strike in France against pension reform led to a drop in electricity output and stopped deliveries from TotalEnergies sites.

Data from the state-controlled nuclear group EDF (EDF.PA) showed that the French power supply had been reduced by about 4.5% or 3 GW as production was lowered at nuclear reactors and thermal plants. 1.4 GW between four reactors reduced nuclear capacity, and 1.6 GW of thermal capacity at three plants was offline.

The strike, which resulted from a backlash against the government’s plans to make people work longer before retirement, also disrupted public transport and schools.

Wage negotiations motivated workers in the nuclear sector and in power production to join the strike.
