Neoen SA, a French renewables company has announced the commencement of the construction for its 200 MW/400 MWh Western Downs Battery in the state of Queensland, Australia.
The company revealed that it has provided notices to proceed to Tesla which will supply its Tesla Megapack systems for the facility, and to the balance of plant contractor UGL.
The battery is expected to be a part of Neoen’s Western Downs Green Power Hub which includes a 460 MWp solar farm that is soon to be completed.
Preliminary construction activities have started and the battery is expected to begin operations in the Australian summer of 2024/2025.
Neoen will be its long-term owner and operator. The company said it now has 776 MW/1279 MWh of battery storage in operation or under construction in Australia. The French firm owns and operates the 300-MW/450-MWh Victorian Big Battery and the 150-MW/193.5-MWh Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia, and is also building the 100-MW/200-MWh Capital Battery in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
After securing support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) recent Large Scale Battery Storage Funding Round, the Western Downs Battery will be equipped with grid-forming inverter technology.
