The Gambia to connect 685 communities to the national grid
- Sets a timeline of 36 months
- World Bank, EU and EIB to fund the projects
The Managing Director, National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), Nani Juwara, has stated that the government has set a target to connect at least 685 communities to the national grid network through several projects. The projects are to be implemented under the Gambia Electricity Restoration and Modernization Project (GERMP). The project costs US$23,184,685.86 and is co-funded by the World Bank, European Union (EU) and European Investment Bank (EIB).
“We are targeting over 685 communities countrywide to have access to electricity in the next 36 months”, Juwara said. “This is indeed a significant milestone in our drive to improve and modernize the dilapidated electricity infrastructure in the country to meet the expectations of our customers”, he added.
The projects will address critical transmission and distribution challenges to improve network stability and service delivery in the country.
