- 46 communities to be electrified under the GERMP

At least forty-six communities in the Central River Region (CRR) and Upper River Region (URR) of the Republic of Gambia are to be electrified. Forty Communities in Sami District, CRR and six communities in Sandu, URR will be the project’s beneficiaries. The electrification projects come under the Gambia electricity restoration and modernization project (GERMP). The project is to be executed by MBH Power.
President Adama Barrow was in attendance at the foundation laying ceremony for the construction of a 30KV line from Laminkoto to Diabugu Batapa. President Barrow noted the importance of the project in improving electricity access in the Gambia. “The contract is the first phase of an ambitious project to electrify forty-six villages from Laminkoto- Diabugu in the Sami and Sandu districts,” he said.
Managing Director National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) Nani Juwara said, “Already, we have signed the contract in June 2021 to electrify over 298 communities in CRR, LRR and WCR and works are expected to commence before the end of 2021”. “We will continue on our reform agenda in making NAWEC financially viable and to be among the best companies in West Africa,” Juwara added.
The project will be funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and World Bank.
