- Windstorm disrupts electricity supply in Greater Banjul
- President Barrow holds an emergency meeting to assess the damage
Residents in the Greater Banjul area were left without electricity supply following a heavy downpour in the area. The rainfall was accompanied by a windstorm which disrupted water supply, commercial activities, learning and left homes without electricity supply.
Residents of the city affected by the windstorm spoke on how the lack of water and electricity supply have affected their day-to-day activities. ”This storm has created a big problem for us. In my house, there is no water since last night. I could not have showered this morning because I left the remaining reserved water for my children to bathe before going to school. But as we speak, we cannot even use the toilet,” Mariama Njie, a resident of the area, said.
The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) spokesperson, Pierre Silva, has apologized to the public for the situation while stating that NAWEC is doing everything to restore services to the people. ”The situation is there are some trees and roofs that fell on our network and some poles have been damaged, and they are down. We are trying to restore. We are working on them to make sure that we resolve the problems,” he said.
Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has held an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders to assess the windstorm impact in the area.
