GE Vernova and 50Hertz secured the Ostwind 4 contract to connect 2 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea to Germany’s grid. The project utilises high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to meet Germany’s growing green energy demands.

Located 30 kilometres from Rügen Island in the Arkona Basin, Ostwind 4 will transmit wind-generated electricity to the mainland with minimal power loss. By 2031, it will deliver energy to nearly two million households.

Germany aims to achieve 80% renewable energy by 2030, and Ostwind 4 plays a critical role in this effort. The project integrates offshore wind farms into the national grid and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, strengthening the country’s energy transition.

Ostwind 4 represents 50Hertz’s first use of 2 GW and 525-kilovolt HVDC systems in the Baltic Sea. Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz, emphasised the need for regulatory changes to connect cross-border wind resources more effectively to Germany’s grid, unlocking the full potential of offshore wind in the region.

HVDC technology enhances renewable energy transmission efficiency. It enables the transport of large electricity volumes over long distances, outperforming traditional alternating current (AC) systems.
