The Zimbabwean government has chosen the German energy developer Geogenix BV to sign an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a power plant. The EPC was approved by the Zimbabwean Ministry of Local Government, and the power plant will have a capacity of 16 to 22MW.
Geogenix BV will also operate the future facility for 30 years before handing it over to the City of Harare. The Pomona Waste-to-Energy project will help Zimbabwe achieve its goals of diversifying its electricity mix and decentralising power generation.
According to the study “Waste Energy Potential in Zimbabwe,” published in 2016, the Pomona landfill receives 1,000 tons of waste per day, out of the 1.7 million tons of solid waste produced in Zimbabwe each year. With a calorific value of 7-8 Mj/Kg, at least 57% of this waste is combustible.
