Geothermal Leasing Redefines Home Heating

  • Geothermal leasing must be considered when planning new home constructions or retrofits.
  • U.S. homes can now explore available incentives to maximise cost savings.

Dandelion Energy has launched a groundbreaking initiative to make geothermal heating and cooling accessible through a leasing programme. This first-of-its-kind residential geothermal leasing scheme in the United States aims to make energy-efficient systems more attainable and affordable for homeowners. The programme encourages wider adoption of sustainable technology by eliminating hefty upfront costs.

The main hurdle for geothermal adoption has always been the large initial investment. With Dandelion’s new model, builders can install geothermal systems at a fraction of traditional HVAC costs. This reduces initial expenses and enhances the appeal of modern homes with premium heating and cooling options. New homeowners can enjoy geothermal benefits for as little as £8–£32 per month.

Dan Yates, CEO of Dandelion Energy, highlighted the mission: “Our leasing programme removes the upfront cost barrier that has slowed adoption. We are moving closer to making geothermal the default choice for American homes.” This approach marks a milestone. It is the first time geothermal is not more expensive than gas furnaces and air conditioners for major builders.

This programme’s affordability is supported by a 30–50% federal Commercial Investment Tax Credit for geothermal heat pumps, valid through 2034 under H.R. 1. This also authorises geothermal system leasing. Geothermal becomes the most cost-effective heating and cooling solution for new homes when paired with state, local, and utility incentives. Initially, the programme will roll out in 16 states with strong geothermal incentives, like Maryland and New Jersey, with plans to expand further.

Dandelion’s initiative, in partnership with Upstream Lease by CSG, aims to provide immediate affordability. Rory Gopaul, Founder & CEO of Upstream Lease, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “By pairing our financing expertise with Dandelion’s innovative technology, we’re helping builders and homeowners save on energy and equipment costs faster than ever.”

Geothermal systems are the most efficient way to heat and cool a home. They can reduce energy bills by over 50% compared to other systems. Geothermal offers a low-impact, grid-friendly solution as electricity demand and costs rise. It uses about 60% less electricity during peak cold days in colder climates. Geothermal systems ensure consistent, year-round comfort by harnessing the earth’s steady underground temperature.
