The GERD is set to commence power generation in August.

According to a statement from the Ethiopian Electric Corporation, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will begin generating power by August this year from the two already completed units. CEO Ashebir Balchastates that each unit can generate 375 MW of energy. Both units will likely generate 400 GW/H providing energy to about 4 million people, Ashebir added.

GERD National Public Participation and Coordination Office also noted that two of the plant’s water tunnels had been completed and began operations. According to the office, the civil work of the project has reached 91 per cent completion while the metal works are already 53.7 per cent complete, putting the overall project completion rate at 79 per cent.
