German Real Estate Company to Install Solar Panels on 30,000 Roofs by 2050

  • German landlord plans to install solar panels on 30,000 roofs.
  • The company also plans on increasing its annual installation to 25MWp.

Germany’s largest residential company, Vonovia, wants to install solar panels on about 30,000 roofs of buildings from its portfolio. The company wants to achieve climate neutrality for all its properties by 2050.  The company plans to raise its yearly solar installation capacity ten times to 25MWp over the next three years and deploy solar panels on 17,000 roofs by 2030. The company estimates that the solar panels will generate 194 million kWh of green electricity, saving 76,500 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. This project will require an investment of €240 million ($281.7m).

The electricity provided by the rooftop systems will be used by the buildings’ tenants to charge their EVs and for heat generation. The company has already deployed solar systems on over 1,000 roofs since 2018 generating over 15 million kWh. So far, the 1,000 installations have cost about  €16 million. Chief executive Rolf Buch stated that the company is “committed to climate protection and are working hard to ensure climate neutrality for all our existing buildings. To do so, it’s vital that we use renewable energies.”
