BayWa r.e. AG, the renewables business of German group BayWa AG, has announced that it will construct a 40 MWp solar-plus-storage plant in the southwestern part of France as part of a project that has the potential to include green hydrogen production also.
After a call for expression of interest (EOI), the BayWa business was selected by the Community of Communes of Haute-Saintonge, alongside French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe SA. Both companies will execute the project in the department of Charente-Maritime.
BayWa stated that it would lead the development of the photovoltaic (PV) park and the battery storage system. Lhyfe will be responsible for the solar-powered green hydrogen aspect of the project. Suggestions have also come from BayWa r.e that the local authority should invest in the project when it’s still at the development stage and later take a majority stake.
The company noted that adding green hydrogen production depends on securing local offtake and utilisation opportunities. It recognises the potential for the output to be sold to industrial players, local authorities, associations or school and urban transport within a 100-150 km radius. A one-year study will be undertaken to confirm this potential.
