Germany Adds 7.2MW Wind Park Capacity

In the German state of Brandenburg, a 7.2 MW wind park with a battery storage system with a capacity of 3 MWh has been put into operation. The hybrid facility, constructed by renewables developer Juwi AG and battery storage specialist Smart Power GmbH, is Germany’s first subsidized wind-plus-storage plant. The project was one of the winners of the Federal Network Agency’s first innovation tender, which was held in September 2020.

Juwi installed two Vestas V136 turbines with 3.6 MW each in the Uckermark district of Brandenburg, and Smart Power built the lithium-ion battery storage system, the two companies announced Wednesday. The Schmoelln II plant’s battery will contribute to supply security and grid stability by allowing green electricity to be fed into the power grid even with low winds. Juwi executive Christian Arnold commented on the project, saying that the issue of storing green power is gaining traction and will play an increasingly important role in the future.

The two companies are collaborating on another hybrid project in Baden-Wuerttemberg, which includes a 9.8-MW solar park and 3.7 MWh of battery storage. The Seckach plant, located in the Neckar-Odenwald district, is scheduled to begin operations in early 2023. MVV, a Mannheim-based energy company, will operate the facility.
