- Germany’s Federal Network Agency awarded 243 MW in biomass power plant projects, with bids totalling 742 MW, more than triple the target of 240 MW.
- Awarded prices ranged from EUR 0.1416 to EUR 0.1848 per kWh, with the average price decreasing to EUR 0.1780/kWh from EUR 0.1828/kWh in the previous round.
- Bavaria led with 127 projects (90 MW), followed by Lower Saxony (50 MW) and Baden-Wurttemberg (33 MW).
Germany’s Federal Network Agency awarded 243 MW for biomass power plant projects in its latest tender. The auction concluded on Thursday, June 20, and attracted 788 bids totalling 742 MW, over three times the 240 MW target.
Of the 263 successful projects, 257 bids covered existing plants with 731 MW. Bidders allocated only 11 MW across eight proposals for new plants. Participants did not submit bids for biomethane projects, and the Agency excluded 36 bids.
Awarded contracts ranged from EUR 0.1416 (USD 0.1497) per kWh to EUR 0.1848 per kWh. The average price fell to EUR 0.1780/kWh, down from EUR 0.1828/kWh in the previous round.
Bavaria secured the most contracts with 127 projects totalling 90 MW. Lower Saxony followed with 50 MW and Baden-Wurttemberg with 33 MW.
These results highlight ongoing financial challenges in the biomass sector. Many existing plants face the end of their initial support contracts. Without new incentives, biogas facilities may close, risking setbacks in Germany’s energy transition, noted Sandra Rostek, head of the Capital Office for Bioenergy.
The next biomass capacity tender will launch on October 1.
