The German government, via the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), plans to increase energy access in the rural areas in Togo. Both countries have signed an agreement to this end. The agreement was signed by Mila Aziable, the Togolese minister of energy, and Matthias Veltin, the German ambassador to Togo. Under the agreement, Germany will provide the West African nation with €825,000 (CFA540 million) for the project. The project is part of ProEnergie, a €6 million initiative designed to supply sustainable and climate-friendly energy sources.
The agreement will enable the deployment of mini-grids that will benefit about 10,000 people in rural communities across In addition, Togo. GIZ has partnered with MIVO, a Togolese non-profit, to establish local infrastructure to produce and sell decentralized energy systems.
