GHANA: ECG Installs 82,000 Smart Meters in Tema Region

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has installed 82,000 smart meters for its customers the Tema region. ECG Commercial Manager for Tema region, Mr Mawudefia Dotse Hlorlewu has said the installations are in line with ECG’s drive ”to continuously improve convenience for customers”. The ECG will increase the use of Clou smart meters in the region while implementing the meter pilot programme.

According to the Regional ECG Engineer, Mr Emmanuel Appoe, the meters are designed to prevent technical and commercial issues such as voltage surges and meter tampering. “These meters can cut off power whenever there are challenges with unstable voltages in the system, be it high or low”, he said. He also added that the meter technology allows ECG officials receive immediate notifications of any attempt at tampering with the installed meters. “ECG officials will immediately know that the meter has been tampered with”, he added.

The ECG began implementing the metering pilot programme in December 2020.
