ACEP calls for efficient management
- Says sector lacks transparency
- Seeks media support in drawing the attention of the government
The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has called on the Ghanaian government to deal with the persistent issues in the electricity sector. The ACEP seeks government support to drive efficient economic growth in the country through efficient management of the electricity sector.
The Policy Lead on Petroleum and Conventional Energy, ACEP, Mr. Kodzo Yaotse made this call during a zoom presentation. The presentation highlighted the issues in the sector requiring critical policy input from the Ghanaian government. Mr. Yaotse called for transparency on the part of the government with regards to transactions in the sector. “The government has consistently indicated that it is negotiating PPAs to relieve the country of excess capacity charges. However, there is no transparency around the negotiations of these PPAs”, he said.
He also added that Ghana must adequately utilise its domestic gas resources and put an end to the plans to import Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). “GNPC should be subjected to strict proof of the identified market that warrants the risks of importing LNG, and that, if by 2022, Ghana is unable to consume the OCTP makeup gas, some people should be held criminally liable for deliberately causing financial loss to the state,” he said.
The Executive Director of ACEP, Mr. Ben Boakye speaking to the media sought the cooperation of the media in drawing the attention of the government to the issues in the sector.
In recent times, the Ghanaian electricity sector has suffered incessant blackouts and a growing debt profile.
