- Ghana is set to roll out its ‘Drive Electric’ campaign
- EV charging stations under construction
- The initiative aims at phasing out fossil vehicles
The Government of Ghana is set to roll out its ‘Drive Electric’ Initiative campaign to encourage a transition from fossil powered vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EV). The Deputy Director, Renewable Energy of the Ghanaian Energy Ministry, Mr Seth Mahu, stated that the campaign would help drive up the demand for EVs in the country.
”The power demand side has not been able to grow to catch up with the supply side, so if the electric drive is encouraged, it will help create that demand,” Mr Mahu said.
”The utilities have some financial challenges with the excess power issue because of the contract they have signed with power producers, popularly known in the industry as ’take or pay. When the power is available, whether we need it or not, they have to pay.” he added.
Mahu also added that the initiative would help Ghana reduce its carbon emissions according to the global climate change carbon reduction policy. He further noted that the Energy Commission would quicken the development of regulations and standards to govern the EV industry.
