- GoG, VRA take over ownership of Ameri power plant
- Ameri power plant to be relocated to the Ashanti region
- Relocation would ensure an annual transmission loss reduction of 15MW
The Government of Ghana (GoG) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) have taken over ownership of the 250MW Ameri power plant, located at Aboadze power enclave in the Western Region. The Ghanaian government acquired the power plant to pave the way for its relocation to Anwomaso in the Ashanti region. The relocation will boost reliable and stable supply in the country.
Mr Edward Obeng-Kenzo, the VRA Thermal Director, who spoke during the handover ceremony, stated that relocating the Ameri plant to Kumasi would facilitate the export of 50MW to Burkina Faso. In addition, Obeng-Kenzo noted that the new power plant would reduce transmission system losses by at least 15MW yearly.
The Deputy Minister of Energy, William Owireku Aidoo, attended the handover event. The Government of Ghana in 2015 signed a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) Agreement with Africa and Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI) for the construction of the emergency power plant.
