Parts of Accra, Tema and Kumasi affected by the blackout
- GRIDCo blames poor gas supply from offshore fields
- About 1000MW lost due to blackout
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has blamed the recent blackout on the night of Saturday, February 27, 2021, on the poor gas supply from its offshore fields. The blackout affected parts of the nation’s capital Accra, Tema, and Kumasi.
In a press statement released by GRIDCo, the company stated that it “wishes to inform the general public that at approximately 18:55PM on Saturday, February 27, 2021 gas supply challenges emanating from the Offshore fields, led to the loss of power supply totalling about 1,000MW.” The statement further said, in order to forestall a total blackout, GRIDCo had to embark on emergency load shedding resulting in blackouts.
However, the GRIDCo has assured that efforts are underway to restore supply. “Gas Supply has resumed upstream and power to the affected areas will be restored shortly,” the statement read.
