The Ghanaian Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) has stated that it is awaiting an announcement of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration National Position on the inclusion of nuclear power into Ghana’s energy mix.
Key issues to be addressed under the programme include Nuclear safety, Management, Funding and financing, Legal framework, Safeguards, Regulatory framework, Human resource development, Radiation Protection, and Electrical grid. Some of the other issues include Stakeholder involvement, Site location, Environmental protection, Radioactive waste management, e.t.c.
The Director of the Nuclear Power Institute, Dr Seth Kofi Debrah, in an interview, stated that critical issues such as the pre-feasibility study and the establishment of a legal/regulatory framework had been completed. He added that the contracting and construction of the nuclear power plant would begin after President Akufo-Addo’s announcement.
According to Dr Debrah, Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) is currently evaluating five vendors who have proposed a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) model and other financing mechanisms for the project. He added that four potential sites had been identified for the project.
