- Ghana to explore more of the renewable energy mix.
- Ghana to adopt Energy Transition Framework serving as a roadmap.
Speaking at Sustainable Energy For All (SEforALL), organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies, on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, President Akufo-Addo declared: “We will continue to increase the share of renewable energy in our electricity generation mix, as well as explore the options of hydrogen gas and other clean energy sources to meet our energy needs.”
President Akufo-Addo claims that everyone on earth is now responsible for the energy transition due to the effects of climate change and the world energy crisis brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The President stated that it is now essential for Ghana to develop plans and strategies toward the creation of a net-zero energy sector while vigorously pursuing the country’s economic development, as the country is a signatory to the Paris Agreement and other international conventions that require the government to reduce its levels of carbon dioxide emissions.
In light of this, he explained to the audience that the Ghanaian government now needs to create an Energy Transition Framework that will serve as a roadmap as the globe advances toward achieving net zero.
The Ghanaian government, aware of the effects such a framework and its implementation would have on the entire economy, instructed the committee to consult widely with stakeholders and seek expert advice to produce the National Energy Transition Framework, which would help the country transition to a net-zero economy by 2070 while minimizing the possibility of stranded assets and job losses in the oil and gas sector.
