GHANA: Sector Challenges Due to Financial Challenges – Ghanaian MP

  • Financial challenges, cause of persistent blackouts says MP
  • Blames Akufo-Addo administration
  • Claims challenges are not technical as GRIDCo alleges

A member of the Ghanaian Parliament and member, Committee on Mines and Energy, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor has said the challenges faced by the Ghanaian power sector are financial and not technical as alleged by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

He attributed the financial challenges to the current administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo who he said has presided over the dwindling fortunes of the sector despite various investments in the sector. He says since the administration took over office, the sector has witnessed “mismanagement and unnecessary political interference” by the Akufo-Addo government in the management of the energy sector.

Mr. Jinapor also accused the GRIDCo of presiding over a worsening financial situation. He added, “Due to the worsening financial position of GRIDCo, Agence Française de Dévelopement (AFP) has had to withhold funding for a major upgrade of the National transmission line culminating in congestion of the GRID”.

He urged the government to, concede its shortcomings, stop the blame game and work towards dealing with the challenges of the sector. ”The government must therefore come clean on the current power crisis as a matter of urgency and desist from engaging in blame game”, he said.
