- GIFA discovers mining sites in the West Rand area of Gauteng.
- It has completed EIA reports for each of the identified sites in collaboration with the provincial government of Gauteng.
- The Agency is expected to engage IPPs in the lease structuring of the available sites in the coming months.
The Gauteng Infrastructure Financing Agency (GIFA), an infrastructure development organization, has identified nine mining sites in the West Rand area of Gauteng Province, South Africa. They have been designated by the provincial government for renewable energy development and could be leased to renewable energy Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
On February 16, 2022, Noxolo Mtembu, Project Manager at the GIFA, announced that feasibility studies conducted on the land show an appropriate topography and solar radiance that is highly suitable for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants.
These sites, which were made available through partnerships with local mining companies, have given investors and developers confidence in infrastructural energy development, owing to their proximity to national grid connections. The GIFA is dedicated to conducting infrastructure feasibility studies and developing optimal funding solutions and funding models. The Agency is expected to engage IPPs in the lease structuring of the available sites in the coming months.
