- GIZ is funding the training of stakeholders in solar PV irrigation systems in Ghana.
- The training will empower credit officers to provide loans to smallholder farmers better.
- An irrigation system will be installed at the training facility, UDS.
The University of Development Studies (UDS) Nyankpala Campus recently signed a funding agreement with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The agreement will see the institute train stakeholders, including technicians, installers, and agricultural extension agents, to install and manage solar PV irrigation systems.
Credit officers from financial institutions are also taking part in the training exercises. This enables them to better understand the technology to accurately evaluate loan applications and provide loans to farmers at affordable interest rates.
As part of the programme, a turnkey irrigation system will be constructed at UDS. The solar-powered system will be equipped with a concrete rainwater harvesting tank with a submersible water pump. The system is expected to be completed by mid-November 2021.
