Google Signs Offshore Wind Agreement in Asia Pacific

  • Google signed its first Asian offshore wind deal with CIP to power its Taiwan operations from the 495 MW Fengmiao I project starting in 2027.
  • The agreement forms part of Google’s broader strategy to achieve 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030, complementing recent solar and geothermal energy deals in Taiwan.

Google has taken a bold step in its global clean energy strategy by announcing its first offshore wind power purchase agreement (PPA) in Asia. The tech giant signed a deal to buy renewable energy from the upcoming Fengmiao I offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a leading energy infrastructure investment manager, is developing the 495 MW project. This agreement adds to a growing list of clean energy initiatives Google launched in Taiwan.

Last year, Google partnered with BlackRock to invest in New Green Power, a solar company within BlackRock’s portfolio, and to source renewable energy for its local data centres and facilities. Just last week, Google signed another deal to purchase geothermal energy from Baseload Capital.

These moves form part of Google’s ambition to run all its operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) by 2030. Since Alphabet, Google’s parent company set this goal in 2020, it has worked to ensure that every kilowatt-hour of electricity it uses is matched with carbon-free energy, hour by hour, in every region where it operates.

Under the new agreement, Google will start purchasing energy from the Fengmiao I wind farm once it becomes operational in 2027. The power generated will help run Google’s data centre, cloud region, and offices in Taiwan.

The project marks the second offshore wind PPA between Google and CIP, which executed the deal through its CI V flagship fund. This investment vehicle focuses on new energy transition projects in low-risk countries. In March, CIP closed the fund with over €12 billion ($13.1 billion) in capital raised.

I-Chun Hsiao, Senior Lead for APAC at Google Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted the significance of the project: “Fengmiao I is a key catalyst for the local offshore wind sector. Starting in 2027, this project will help power our data centre, cloud region and offices in Taiwan. By integrating offshore wind with our existing solar and geothermal projects, we’re advancing our 24/7 carbon-free energy goal while helping Taiwan bring on new energy resources to help meet electricity demand.”

With this latest agreement, Google continues to shape the energy landscape in Asia and reinforces its role as a corporate leader in the global transition to sustainable energy.
