Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has approved over ₦340 million to address electricity supply issues at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina (UMYUK). The funding, announced in a statement by Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu-Yar’adua, Director of Press in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), is intended to resolve persistent power outages that have disrupted academic activities at the state-owned institution.
The allocation includes ₦260 million for replacing a 33KVA indoor control panel and associated accessories, which are crucial for maintaining the power supply to the university. Over ₦98 million has been earmarked for installing solar security lights to enhance campus safety. This investment is part of a broader effort to combat vandalism and improve security at the university.
Aliyu-Yar’adua noted that the governor’s decision was a swift response to recent reports of power outages affecting the university, which led to an extension of the mid-semester break. Governor Radda’s administration aims to restore a conducive learning environment and support the university’s operations. The SSG, Alhaji Abdullahi Faskari, highlighted the governor’s commitment to improving education standards and addressing infrastructure issues within the state.
The university’s management extended the mid-semester break due to power supply issues. A statement from Muhammad Yusufu-Abubakar, the Registrar and Secretary to the university’s Senate, revealed that the initial resumption date of September 16, 2024, was no longer feasible. The university senate postponed the resumption until the power supply problems were resolved.
Governor Radda has expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by the university’s staff and students during this period. He assured that his administration is dedicated to uplifting educational standards and promptly addressing such disruptions.
