For the first time in history, Greece had its total power demand met by renewable energy last week. Reports from the independent power transmission operator (IPTO) stated that it was a major milestone for Greek given that On Friday, 7 October, the country ran entirely on renewable power sources for about five hours, reaching a record high of 3,106MWh at eight o’clock (GMT).
The IPTO added that the interconnections executed on sea and land creates the possibility for even greener energy mix penetration in the coming years. According to The Green Tank, a Greece-based environmental think tank, In January 2022, Renewables accounted for 46% of the nation’s energy mix against 42% in 2021, noting that this milestone was a record of optimism for the country’s transition to clean energy sources.
Greece is currently ahead of Germany, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and many other European nations in energy generation through renewables. Greece plans to increase its renewable energy capacity from 10 gigawatts to 25 gigawatts, thereby more than doubling its green energy capacity and ensuring that its green energy capacity accounts for at least 70% of its energy mix by 2030. In addition, the country aims to attract about 30 billion euros in European funds and private investments to upgrade its electricity grid.
