According to the energy minister, Kostas Skrekas, Greece plans to add 3GW of battery energy storage capacity by 2030 to support the increased adoption of renewables.
The country intends to revise its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to include a 3GW goal for energy storage by 2030, against an earlier target for 1.4GW of capacity. A report by Energypress says that the prior objective will be moved forward to 2025.
According to the report, the upgraded target will be aligned with Greece’s enhanced ambitions for renewable energy deployments through 2030. While previously, the NECP called for Greece to have 19GW of renewables in operation by 2030, 7.05GW of wind and 7.66GW of solar, the targeted volume has reportedly increased to 25GW. In a press release, the energy ministry stated that the installed renewables capacity would be over 20GW.
