- Nigerian officials support the green hydrogen project for national food sufficiency and climate change initiatives.
According to the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs Annett Gunther, the renewable energy sector could create 112 million jobs globally by 2030. She announced this at a Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology reception for a German delegation on green hydrogen.
Gunther noted the renewable energy sector has already created jobs for 390,000 people in Germany. She emphasised the hydrogen sector’s role in stimulating economic growth and job creation.
“Hydrogen aims to meet climate change goals and feed the population here. We align in this hydrogen partnership, benefiting both countries,” Gunther said.
Mr Till Mansmann, Innovation Commissioner for Hydrogen in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, praised Nigeria as a critical partner and highlighted its large youth population as a significant advantage for the project.
Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr Uche Nnaji, stated that green hydrogen would help Nigeria tackle climate change and other issues. He mentioned that the initiative would support Nigeria in achieving the 2030 Paris Agreement targets, which also ensures sufficient fertiliser to combat food shortages.
“We will achieve the 2030 Paris Agreement on climate change, making our involvement in the 2010 Paris Agreement a reality,” Nnaji affirmed. He promised the Nigerian government’s full support for the project.
Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, said green hydrogen could improve food security. This is done by making fertiliser more accessible to farmers.
Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation Bello Muhammad Goroyo also pledged support. He stressed the ministry’s readiness to use the country’s water resources and dams for the project. Which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s food sufficiency agenda.
“We are ready to utilise our waters and dams for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Goroyo stated.
The event underscored the commitment between Nigeria and Germany to harness green hydrogen for economic and environmental benefits.
